TELRADIO: MAY 18; The country is marking the first anniversary of militarily defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE),
despite the main ceremonies to mark the event being called off due to adverse weather conditions.
Religious ceremonies are among the events being held in various parts of the country to remember those who perished in the war while security personnel killed in the conflict also are being remember by their family members as well as by their respective units. But, whether the event is marked with a major ceremony or not the people have been enjoying the freedom of movement, with relaxed security arrangements and fewer check points during the year.
For people in the north too they have been enjoying the benefits of the end of the war, though they are yet to be allowed free access into all areas previously occupied by civilians. Certain security restrictions along with the mine clearing process has delayed the process.
The international campaign to probe the events during the final stages of the war has been there since the military campaign ended, and the government partially responding to these calls on Monday appointed a Commission to make recommendations on preventing another conflict while probing the past.
A year after the war has ended people are looking forward to rise up after three decade old war.
