Thousands celebrate Vesak in Sri Lanka under peaceful conditions


TELRADIO:MAY 29: Tens of thousands of people have thronged the cities in Sri Lanka to witness Vesak celebrations which is being marked in a grand scale in most parts of the island.
Helped by the improved weather conditions people were seen moving out in vehicles, motorcycles, hand tractors, bicycles and on foot to see Vesak Pandals, Lanterns and decorations which enjoying the food on the wayside Dansalas.
In a marked difference the Dansalas offered ice cream, fruit drinks in addition to the usual rice and curry meals. But some of the unusual Dansal such as one of them which offered Kerosene oil in a remote village in Badulla too was observed.
But, in main towns crowds were moving about freely with the relaxed security in contrast to where they had to move through check points and under security screening before the moved closer to pandals during the height of the war.
“We have come all the way from Kalutara to witness Vesak in Colombo because we know that there are no security problems. This is something we would have never thought of”, Rasika Rajapaksa said.
Despite the recent floods and the high economic cost the entusiasam in mark the Vesak celebrations had not reduced.
Vesa celebrations were also marked in the north and eastern provinces with the residents too taking part in the events. In Batticaloa large number of Muslims and Tamils were seen parading the streets to witness the celebrations.
